Artists are in a difficult position right now. We cannot deny the destructive role of social media monopolies in the acceleration of oligarchy in the United States and accross the world. At the same time, for many, Instagram and TikTok are vital tools to reach audiences and connect with other artists.
As we prepare to bring our show to The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, I (Mal MacKenzie) and the “Roadkill Bambi” team have concluded that as with most things in this world, we must learn to hold two opposing truths in our fragile human hearts at once.
1) We are an international company headed to the largest theater festival in the world, in a country where we do not know people. A social media presence will help to reach the folks who might be positively impacted by our genre bending piece of queer eco-theater.
2) Social Media, specifically Meta but also any platform seeking to obfuscate truth, is a tool of corporations which are not invested in the work of artists, only in profiting off of us.
For these reasons, “Roadkill Bambi” has an Instagram (TikTok in process) on which we hope to spread the word about our show and why it is of particular relevance to our time.
For these reasons, Roadkill Bambi will be offering an alternative to those platforms in the form of this WordPress Blog which you can subscribe to as a newsletter through the email form below. We’ll be posting regular updates on the show, fun stories from its conception, and more. Anything you could find on a social media profile you will find here.
Obviously WordPress is also a big tech business. And we use Gmail which is Google. As our play makes clear: Every choice under the current system is bad. But some choices are less bad. So if you have been hoping to divest from Meta, however incrementally, perhaps choosing to sign up for notifications from this site can be a step towards staying connected to the things that matter to you at the same time.
Peace,
Mal MacKenzie and The Blue Loop Group
